Born in Budapest1925-27 First learns photography from his mother, a photographer, and his father, owner of a news agency. Leaves school in Berlin to pursue a career in photography.
1929-33 Establishes studio in Paris, then in Berlin (1931). Freelance photojournalist for Berliner Illustrierte, Hamburger Illustrierte, and Munchener Illustrierte, stringer for London Daily Express and Keystone View, and at Talbot Studio, Paris, as advertising and portrait photographer. Subjects include Josephine Baker, President Paul Doumer, Sacha Guitry, and Yvonne Printemps.
1932 Visits America on assignment for Mercedes-Benz.
1933 Leaves Berlin when Hitler is appointed chancellor.
1933-37 Unable to secure permits, photographs reproduced in German photo annuals are credited to his mother, Margaret Willinger. Establishes studio in Vienna. Photographs celebrities including Marlene Dietrich, Sigmund Freud, Emil Jannings, Karl Jung, and Hedy Lamarr. Also documents Max Reinhardt stage productions. Contributes photographs to Pageant.
1936 Photographs made in Africa, India, Italy, and Russia for Keystone Press Agency published in London Daily Express. Stationed in Spain during the civil war.
1937 "Discovered" by Eugene R. Richee, emigrates to the United States, replacing Ted Allan at MGM.
1946-54 Establishes Hollywood photographic studio, specializing in color work for studios and advertising agencies and editorial photography for magazines. Photographs widely published on magazine covers and calendars.
1954- Freelance photographer for advertising agencies and periodicals.
1989 Survived by wife Yvonne Willinger.
