1910 Born in Clifton, Arizona

1929 Working as a commercial artist for the Art Guild, Los Angeles, creates drawings, paintings, and pastels from still photographs for Metropolitan Theatre lobbies. Experiments with simple Brownie camera and mirror reflectors, making portraits of friends. Opens portrait studio on Hollywood Boulevard, photographing actors appearing in Hollywood Playhouse productions. Part-time actor.

1932 Hired by photographer Otto Dyar as still photographer on Charlie Chan series at Fox.

1933 Photographs Tarzan and His Mate with Johnny Weismuller and Maureen O'Sullivan for MGM. Makes on-location, off-stage candid portraits with a Graflex 5x7 camera. The resulting photographs of O'Sullivan attract the attention of Howard Strickling, head of MGM publicity, who promotes him to studio portrait gallery, replacing George Hurrell.

1936 In competition with Russell Ball and Tom Evans, chosen as Jean Harlow's exclusive photographer.

1937 Still photographer at Selznick on A Star Is Born, Nothing Sacred, and The Prisoner of Zenda. Joins IATSE #659.

1937-45 Photographs radio personalities at CBS; hires Hurrell.

1945-56 On a contract basis working as still photographer for producers, including Cecil B. DeMille, photographs Samson and Delilah (1949) and The Ten Commandments (1956).

1946 Television cameraman on Colgate Comedy Hour.

1947-51 As a member of Screen Actors Guild appears in supporting roles in feature films.

1952-55 Opens Ted Allan Film Studios and as cinematographer and still man, shoots featurettes, documentaries, and low-budget feature films.

1961-68 Still man and cinematographer for Frank Sinatra film productions and Reprise Records. "Rat pack" name: Farley Focus.

1970-80 As cinematographer, resumes making short documentaries.

1993 Survived by wife Jeannie Allan, daughter Holly Allan-Young and granddaughter Terry Young-Neches.
